Week 6 Gold: Fantasy or Fools?
By Lamar

A player on your radar had a big game. Do you pick him up? This is where we decide whether their forecast is fantasy or fools gold.

Dyami Brown WR Washington Commanders

2 receptions, 4 targets, 105 rec yards, 2 TD

Brown led all Washington wide receivers in yards and touchdowns filling in for the injured WR Jahan Dotson. Not a bad day for the substitute WR3 considering he only had 1 reception for 6 yards in the first 4 games of the year. If the Commanders’ offense were a fantasy juggernaut like the Bills’ or Chiefs’ then we might have something here. Brown looked fast torching the Titans’ DB for his first touchdown of the game. Unfortunately with the uneven play of QB Carson Wentz it is difficult to trust Washington’s substitute WR3. Until there are more injuries and consistent play from the QB, Brown will remain Fool’s Gold.

Josh Reynolds WR Detroit Lions

6 receptions, 10 targets, 92 rec yards

Reynolds was featured in this column last week as Fools Gold, but I plan on amending those comments this week. Remember the Lions’ have a robust passing attack and they will continue to play from behind for the rest of the season. Reynolds became fantasy relevant because of injuries to St. Brown and Chark. For the 2nd week in a row Reynolds has led the Lions in receiving yards with a dinged up St. Brown. Until Chark returns from injuries then Reynolds remains Fantasy Gold. The Lions offense is capable of providing consistent targets to the WR2 every game because they are usually behind after a few minutes into the game. If Reynolds is available then grab him and ride the good fortune until Chark returns.

Randall Cobb WR London Packers

7 receptions, 13 targets, 99 rec yards

Cobb led all London Packer wide receivers this week in targets and yards. QB Aaron Rodgers targeted Cobb more in week 5 than the previous 4 games combined. If Cobb were younger and a little healthier then he could emerge as the Packers WR2, but this is not 2014. This game is an anomaly because the Packers’ young wide receivers could not get open against the stout Giants secondary, forcing Rodgers to check down to Cobb, the team’s clear WR3. Cobb might have another game or two like this later this season, but who can predict when that will happen? Leave Cobb on the wire because he is still squarely Fools Gold.

Marvin Jones Jr. WR Jacksonville Jaguars

7 receptions, 11 targets, 104 rec yards

I really wanted this to be a breakout game for QB Trevor Lawrence where he announced to the NFL his arrival as a big time QB. It did not happen and we are left with young, inconsistent quarterback play. Jones had a great game leading the Jaguars in targets, catches and yards. Jones is the Randall Cobb of the Jacksonville Jaguars except he has a young QB throwing him the ball while Cobb has Rodgers. I think this team wants Zay Jones to be their WR2, but maybe it breaks down better as Zay WR2a and Marvin WR2b. The problem is that the Jaguars offense is not good enough to provide steady production for a WR2 yet. Maybe that comes as the season goes on and one of the Joneses will emerge as the true WR2. If both of those happen then grab the Jones that steps up. Until then steer clear of this Fools Gold situation.
