Week 3 Gold: Fantasy or Fools?

By Lamar

A player on your radar had a big game. Do you pick him up? This is where we decide whether their forecast is fantasy or fools gold.

Nelson Agholor WR New England Patriots

Agholor had a great day in the win against the Steelers this week. He finished the day catching all 6 targets for 110 years and 1 TD. This was his follow up to a poor performance against the Dolphins, 3 catches on 5 targets for 28 yards and a fumble. So maybe you are thinking that Week 1 was an exception and we can expect Week 2 Nelson Agholor from here on out?

This is the same Agholor who made some noise with the Raiders last year and with the Eagles in 2017. So is this his breakout? No. We cannot expect anything near this type of production from Agholor the rest of the season. I would be surprised if he comes close to another game like this again. If I had to have a Patriots WR, Jakobi Meyers will be a much steadier contributor. Nelson Agholor remains Fools Gold, let him stay on your waiver wire.

Corey Davis WR New York Jets

I remember a time when I thought Corey Davis was Fantasy Gold, due for a Year 2 breakout with the Tennessee Titans. Davis had almost 900 yards and 4 touchdowns his sophomore year in the NFL. He almost broke 1000 yards receiving two years later in 2020. Fool me once Corey Davis…

Davis finished Week 2 with 83 yards and a touchdown, following a Week 1 performance with 77 yards and no touchdowns. Those are the numbers of a bye week fill in on your bench right? Keep on looking my friend. Even if there is a rash of injuries to the rest of the Jets wide receiver corp, Davis would not be someone you can rely on every week. He remains now and forever will be Fools Gold.

Raheem Mostert RB Miami Dolphins

Generally it is best to stay away from committee backfields for fantasy purposes. The results are generally much better in real life than in fantasy. With that being said, Dolphins’ Head Coach Mike McDaniel has produced some great running back seasons as offensive coordinator for the 49ers. He should be able to do the same in Miami and Raheem Mostert looks like he is ready to emerge as RB1 for the Dolphins.

This is still a committee backfield, with no one dominating touches. Mostert out touched RB Chase Edmonds 14 to 6 in Week 2’s win against Baltimore. If that split holds then Mostert will be a useful flex most weeks and will be Fantasy Gold should there be any injuries in the Miami backfield.
